I can no longer abide the application of the pathetically weak and flaccid term "Safety" to Gladiators.
It is struck from my Vocabulary.
The erstwhile "Free Safety" is truly the CenterFielder of the Defense. Honestly, I consider the term absolutely perfect.
And the erstwhile "Strong Safety", playing an increasingly hybrid Role and constantly improvising, is a RoverBack, I think.
When analyzing the Merits of a prospective RoverBack, this is how I personally break things down:
Intangibles: Diagnostic Acuity, Field Vision, and, above all: Processing Speed. And of course: Motor. Motor Matters.
Agility: Acceleration, Fluidity, and Closing Speed. And of course: Verticity!! Turning & Burning in Direct Coverage.
Run Support: Appetite, Tactical Discipline, and Combat Skills ~ working through Traffic & Tackling Mechanics.
Pass Prevention: Timing, Vertical Burst, WingSpan, and don't forget the Brutality!!
Agility: Excellent. If I thought that he should stay at CornerBack ~ which most every other Draft Ghoul seems to think is best ~ then I'd put it at "Competitive." But while his Acceleration and Closing Speed are only moderate, his Fluidity is superb, and his Verticity is good for a CornerBack, and outstanding for a Rover. All told, that's an impressive Skill Set.
Run Support: Tremendous. Hampton brings outstanding Combat Skills, Tackling, and an Appetite for Contact to the Battle.
Pass Prevention: Proficient. Strong Combat Skills, adequate Tracking & Timing, and fine Hands.
For such a possibly imbalanced personality, Victor Hampton brings a remarkably balanced Game to the Field of Battle. He projects, in my view, into one of the best Run Defending RoverBacks in the League while also projecting into becoming one of the best Pass Covering RoverBacks in the League. And this is a guy who didn't even get drafted.
His Potential Value, in my Perception? 1st/2nd Round range. Potential Beast.
Of course in terms of my beloved term Trajectory, whether or not Hampton brings the required Intelligence and Drive that it's going to take to fulfill his tremendous Potential and earn the Trust of his TeamMates is another matter.
Thanks, as always, to the extraordinary Work by the men of Draft BreakDown!!
