Intangibles: Diagnostic Acuity, Field Vision, and, above all: Processing Speed. And of course: Motor. Motor Matters.
Agility: Acceleration, Fluidity, and Closing Speed. And of course: Verticity!! Turning & Burning in Direct Coverage.
Pass Prevention: Combat Skills in Coverage, and Timing, Vertical Burst, and WingSpan at the Catch Point.
Run Support: Appetite, Tactical Discipline, and Combat Skills ~ working through Traffic & Tackling Mechanics.
Agility: Phenomenal. His Fluidity when he mirrors his Prey is sensational.
Pass Prevention: Magnificent. Gaines's Prowess at the CatchPoint is simply preposterous: His Tracking, Timing, and Closing Speed are phenomenal. And his Combat Skills in Press and at the CatchPoint are outstanding.
Run Support: Weak. Adequate Core Power, but he's willowy, only moderately interested, and he often gets tossed aside.
Given that I don't give a rat's @$$ about "40" Time, Phillip Gaines's performance at the Combine ~ including that blazing 438 on the 40 ~ was highly impressive. The 3 Cone and Short Shuttle do mean something, in my opinion.
And Gaines rocked them, as well.
That, in and of itself, is hardly overwhelming: The gutters are littered with the moldering corpses of Combine All Stars.
But when I consider that Gaines was only targeted 40 Times, last Year, that makes me stand up and take notice.
And when I consider that he only gave up 13 Receptions ~ that's an obscene 32.5%!! ~ then my eyes bug out.
And when I consider than he directly thwarted 13 of those ill-advised and ill-fated Pass Attempts ~ after directly rejecting no less than 18 the previous Year with his right hand in a cast the entire Year!! ~ then my eyes pop right out of my head.
It wasn't the QuarterBacks, Ladies & Laddies.
It wasn't the Level of Play.
And Phillip Gaines is no Combine Warrior.
He is a Natural.
Gaines need to Beef Up some more, but he's clearly got the Frame for it, and he's already demonstrated the Capacity to do so by laying on 7 or 8 Pounds before his spectacular Combine performance. And even at 185 or so, he exhibited surprising Core Power and outstanding Combat Skills in Press Coverage.
And his Instincts, Tracking, and Timing at the CatchPoint are simply astonishing.
Phillip Gaines has nothing less than Shut Down Corner Potential.
Thanks, as always, to the extraordinary Work by the men of Draft BreakDown!!
