When analyzing the Merits of a prospective CornerBack, this is how I personally break things down:
Intangibles: Diagnostic Acuity, Field Vision, and, above all: Processing Speed. And of course: Motor. Motor Matters.
Agility: Acceleration, Fluidity, and Closing Speed. And of course: Verticity!! Turning & Burning in Direct Coverage.
Pass Prevention: Combat Skills in Coverage, and Timing, Vertical Burst, and WingSpan at the Catch Point.
Run Support: Appetite, Tactical Discipline, and Combat Skills ~ working through Traffic & Tackling Mechanics.
Agility: Phenomenal. Magnificent Fluidity. Tremendous Acceleration and extraordinary Closing Speed.
Pass Prevention: Horrible. Purifoy flashes this and that from time to time, but taken as an whole, his Combat Skills are atrocious. He is undisciplined and inconsistent, both in Direct Coverage and at the CatchPoint. It's crazy, because he clearly possesses the Agility to be extraordinary in Bail & Trail, but his Mechanics are horrible.
Run Support: Inconsistent, but this is, to my mind, where I see the clearest glimpse of Hope with Young Purifoy, because in Run Support, where even some of the most stalwart CornerBack Prospect suck, Purifoy, who has "Flake" written all over'm, displays startlingly impressive Mechanics and a clear Appetite for Contact. Go figure.
I recently suggested that Justin Gilbert was a good "Buy" at this point, based on the ebb and flow of his College Career, and suggested the same about Bradley Roby, though I perceive them to be at different points in their Growth.
Gilbert, I perceive as having carved out what I like to refer to as a
You should only be concerned, at this point, if that actually does make sense to you!! Sanity is not my Hallmark.
The Thread that connects those two, though, in my fevered imagination, is that they have established themselves as Alpha Stocks...Much as had Commerce One , by the Autumn of 1999, at which point it slipped comfortably into what I like to refer to as a Consolidation Zone as it recharged its Batteries before its legendary Surge in December of 1999.
Anthony Barr, who has tumbled in Perception from being considered by some to be Jadeveon Clowney's superior only a short couple of months ago to the bottom of the 1st Round with quite possibly much further to go, evokes Commerce One in my mind. As far as I can see, he is still a wild and wonderful Growth Stock, and the Sky his Limit.
Lucheiz Purifoy, on the other hand, does not inspire within me the same sense of Impending Excellence,
He does not evoke in my Mind's Eye the notion of a Rising Star caught at a moment in time on his Path to Greatness.
He strikes me as a remarkably talented young man...but one who's Prospect are very much in doubt.
Hey. I'm only Placing Bets, here.
Many will fail.
Every last one of those guys I mentioned above could very well fall flat on their faces, while Loucheiz Purifoy carves out a legendary Career, wins eleven Super Bowls, and inspires millions with his Rise to Glory.
And, Hell: He is a talented fellow.
But from where I'm sitting, I see a dubious Record of Dedication, Discipline, and Drive.
His Mechanics are awfully raw for someone who's spent the last few Years in an acclaimed Institution, he was a freaking mess, this Year, and at the end of the day, when you strip away all the Perceptions of one Year ago, I believe that we're talking about raw Athletic Talent, a decent Frame, flashes of Instinct...and an enormous load of Work to be done.
The Talent?
1st Rounder.
No doubt.
But the gutters are littered with the Corpses of 1st Round Talent.
On an ironic note: In writing my Scouting Report on Kyle Fuller, earlier this very day, I admitted ~ possibly infusing a smidgeon of Hyperbole ~ that it was scary to grade someone so highly who was so bereft of natural Talent.
Well, it is now my deeply twisted and deranged pleasure to reverse that statement regarding Lucheiz Purifoy, and admit that it is indeed scary to grade someone so lowly who is so suffused with such immense natural Talent.
I consider'm a Lottery Ticket, at this stage in the Game...and I must grade'm accordingly. Crazy Ivan ~ a sharp Declension in Fortune, followed by a Resurgence ~ while Roby seems to me to've carved out that Declension...and is poised for a sharp Resurgence.
Thanks, as always, to the extraordinary Work by the men of Draft BreakDown!!
