Those who are True Hybrid Threats are among the deadliest Players in the Game.
The "Tight Ends" who spend far more of their time running Routes from all over the Formation, and who aren't especially renowned for their Blocking ~ though many of them are adept Chippers ~ I refer to as Flex Ends.
Those who are True Hybrid Threats are among the deadliest Players in the Game.
Finally, those Hybrid Players who are so ridiculously Hybridized that they literally roam back and forth over the constantly fluctuating line between "LineMan" and "Back" ~ and who a confused FootBall World has clumsily designated, at times, as either "Tight End", "H-Back", or "FullBack", I refer to as WingBacks.
WingBack is a Position that by its very nature rests upon the Ethereal Edge between "LineMan" and "Back".
As such, I believe that the Term exquisitely captures the Essence of these particular Hybrids.
They're terms ~ WingBack and Flex End ~ that I find 1000 times cooler than "H-Back" or "Move" Tight End.
But that's me!!
Because Tight Ends, in the particular sense that I employ the term, are optimally genuine 50/50 Hybrids, I focus equal attention on Attributes both of Linemen and of WideOuts in producing my Scouting Reports:
Lineman Attributes
Power. Above all: Core Power. Upper body Strength is important, but Core Power, from the Knees to the Ribs, is absolutely crucial. All the upper body strength in the world still fails if you can't dig in your heels. But Core Power enables a Lineman to project Power in the Running Game and to reject Power in the Passing Game. And those Players who invest the time and effort to develop superior Core Power are far likelier to enjoy sustained good Health and stay on the Field.
Agility. Lateral Velocity, Acceleration, and above all: Fluidity or Core Agility. Core Agility is even more essential to sustained good Health ~ and to sustained good FootBall ~ than Core Power. The ability to react with Serpentine smoothness is a tremendous asset in all Aspects of the Game, and certainly in the Hand to Hand Combat that characterizes Trench Warfare. All the Power in the World goes only so far if you're stiff and lumbering out there.
Combat Skills. Mechanics. Launch Velocity, Paw Power, and Technique.
Intangibles. Diagnostic Capacity, Processing Speed, and Motor. How effectively he masters Spatial Diagnostics & Angles, how rapidly he recognizes and implements Blocking Schemes based on changing Defensive Tactics, and of course: Drive. How badly he wants it. These are of course difficult things to assess, but it's crucial to at least try to.
WideOut Attributes
Separation. Getting Open. This encompasses their ability to beat Press, their Acceleration out'f the Blocks, their Routing Precision, their Agility, their Ricochet, their capacity to outsmart Defenders, and their Instincts.
Catching. This encompasses Hands, Catch Radius, Vertical Agility, and Timing.
Navigation. How well he Navigates the Field in Pursuit of Yards After Catch: Power, Agility, and Field Vision.
Power. Moderate, but with a Frame that oozes Potential.
Agility. Impressive. Not explosive, but his Fluidity is exceptional.
Combat Skills. Raw but with tremendous Potential. Great Motor, excellent Paw Power, and impressive Field Vision.
Intangibles. Superior. Grasp of Mechanics is raw, but Motor is tremendous and he appears Intelligent.
WideOut Attributes
Separation ~ Adequate. Not much Acceleration off the Line or Ricochet to'is Breaks, but impressive Fluidity and developing Instincts for Space and Timing. Routing needs work, to be certain, but is showing increasing refinement.
Catching ~ Exceptional. Good Hands, impressive Timing, nice Agility, and a large Strike Zone.
Navigation ~ Adept. No Ricochet, but Fluidity and some Power. He'll drag a Defender or two.
And if he does so, he could become one of the very best Blockers in this Class, and a reliable Receiver who, while not exactly Dangerous, could prove to be a Possession Receiver that Defenders find extremely difficult to deny.
Given half a chance and decent Coaching, he could develop into a Starter before long, and quite possibly a good one.
Thanks, as always, to the extraordinary Work by the men of Draft BreakDown!!
