Good Morning, Brothers and Sisters, Fellow FootBall Fiends...

I presume Nothing ~ such being my Philosophy ~ but considering that some'f you honor this Beloved Site of Mine by paying it a Visit, every now and then, I consider it only proper to give you a Shout Out, now and then...

It amuses me to witness how dramatically my Scouting Reports constrict over the course of the Scouting Season, evolving from lengthy Rambles to quick, concentrated Capsules, by the end of each Campaign.

Just for The Record: The short, to-the-Point, Brisk and occasionally Brusque SnapShots are what I actually aspire to...The lengthy, rambling Diatribes that I generally start the Season off with are not actually what I long to produce.

I'm just a bit...long-winded, as it turns out...But I'm working on that!!

The Goal is always to crank out Scouting Reports on every Prospect who either I or The Market consider worthy of getting drafted in the Top 5 Rounds, and to do so by the end of Draft WeekEnd, following through with the handful of Super Surprises who snuck into the Top 5 Rounds unexpectedly, the following week...I have obviously fallen very short of that ambitious Goal every Year, so far ~ and that's 5 Years running ~ but I remain faithful to it, and strive on.

Regarding Slot Corners

Throughout the FootBall World, Defenses are undergoing Transformational, Revolutionary Change.

Old Roles are getting dramatically transformed, and virtually every Front 7 ~ or Front 6!! ~ Defensive Job Description is transitioning into an Hybrid Role where the Defender is asked to excel in multiple Roles and in multiple Fronts.

For that reason, and in order to offer NomenClature that speaks not to archaic, obsolete "Positions", but rather to Skill Sets that accurately reflect the dynamic Changes of the 21st Century Game and the Roles they have spawned, I have undertaken to craft Terminology that is designed to break Skill Sets down as they really are.

Defensive Coordinators have, since Time Immemorial, employed highly creative terminology in devising Defenses and in designating Assignments. In that Spirit, I have admittedly indulged myself considerably in devising the following NomenClature. It is undeniably colorful, but I like to think that there's an underlying Logic, as well:

Slot Corners ~ Upon Further Review, I confess that I believe that I went A Bridge Too Far with this Business of rebranding NickelBacks as CenterFielders. CenterFielders ~ "Free Safeties" to you Earthlings!! ~ are optimally Hybrids capable of Direct Coverage, anyway, and my premise that NickelBacks ought to be able to manifest the Processing Speed that CenterFielders need, as well as the Run Defense Aspect of a CenterFielder was pushing Evolution too fast.

It would be terrific for Defenses if NickelBacks were all spry yet beefy 5090/210 Pounders whose Frames could stand up to the rigors of the Run Defense that is an important Aspect of a CenterFielder's Game.

But even then, their Height would be a Liability in surveying the Tactical LandScape.

NickelBacks are of course Pass Defense Specialists, but I will include Run Defense in my Evaluations. But I will note, of course, that as with Blocking as it pertains to WideOuts, it is desirable, yes, but its absence is no Red Flag.

This is how I break down Slot Corners:

Agility: Acceleration, Ricochet, Fluidity, and Verticity ~ that's Turn & Burn Acuity, to you Earthlings!!

Processing Speed: How quickly and effectively one Reads & Reacts to the developing Play.

Run Defense: Power, Agility, Combat Skills, Processing Speed, Motor, and Tackling.

Pass Coverage: Agility, Processing Speed, and Field Vision.

CatchPoint Capacity: Tracking, Timing, Combat Skills, and WingSpan.

Broken down into SubCategories, it'd go something like this:

Agility

* Fluidity, above all things: Core Agility & Flexibility makes everything possible.
* Ricochet ~ How crisply and how rapidly one breaks in a new direction.
* Acceleration ~ Short Speed or Quickness. Closing Speed.
* Verticity ~ The Ability ~ or lack thereof ~ to Flips Hips and Turn & Burn in Pass Coverage.

Processing Speed

* How quickly and effectively one Reads & Reacts to the developing Play.

Run Defense

* Power
* Agility
* Combat Skills
* Processing Speed
* Motor
* Tackling

Pass Coverage

* Agility ~ Fluidity, Ricochet, Acceleration, and Speed, baby!!
* Processing Speed ~ Reading and Reacting with Speed & Precision to Offensive Tactics.
* Field Vision ~ Processing Speed with an emphasis on the Tactical LandScape.

CatchPoint Capacity

* Tracking
* Timing
* Combat Skills
* WingSpan
* Vertical Agility

Jamal Agnew ~ Scouting Report

Agility: Exceptional. Mediocre Fluidity but blistering Speed.

Processing Speed: Sensational.

Run Defense: Impressive. Small with horribly short Arms, but a strong Motor, terrific Anticipation, and good Combat Skills.

Pass Coverage: Excellent. Tremendous combination of Agility and Field Vision.

Catch Point Capacity: Outstanding. Small Arms and he's Short, but he brings a tremendous combination of Tracking and Timing, Vertical Launch and Agility, and Combat Skills to the Catch Point, and simply racks up Rejections!!

Jamal Agnew ~ Prospectus

Heh. Yeah, we're talking Division 63, here, but I don't care: Jamel Agnew is a former No Star Recruit who oozes Talent, and his Intelligence and Drive are intensely impressive. He's Short, and he's Small, but he's Intelligent and Driven, and I believe that he's got a legitimate Chance to make a substantial Impact at the next Level!!

I'm trying to discern Power, Agility, Combat Skills, and far more abstract, esoteric Concepts such as Processing Speed and Motor, and I'm trying to do so based almost entirely on a fascinating fusion of Tape, Combine Numbers, and Pro Days, while trying to attenuate my findings based on Allowances for Competition Level, Scheme, Concept, Context, and, above all: Trajectory!!

None of this is even remotely a Complaint, mind you, but rather a Warning!! Caveat Emptor!

Corn Elder ~ Scouting Report

Agility: Effective. Moderate Fluidity, but his Acceleration, Ricochet, and Speed are good.

Processing Speed: Magnificent.

Run Defense: Exceptional!! Small and Short, but exceptional Core Power and outstanding Combat Skills and Motor!!

Pass Coverage: Impressive. Adept Fluidity is greatly enhanced by'is remarkable Anticipation and Instincts.

Catch Point Capacity: Excellent. I continue to find it amazing and amusing that Corners like Elder who don't rack up a lot of Interceptions are almost universally held to have poor "Ball Skills"!! Excuse me, but phuck "Ball Skills". I researched extensively, and it turns out: the guy plays CornerBack. His job isn't to catch the Ball. It's to prevent Catches.

And Elder led Miami in Rejections each of the last 2 Campaigns.

Sheesh.

Corn Elder ~ Prospectus

We're talking Slot Corner, here, so, as with the Offensive Equivalent of FlexBack, we're talking about a Skill Set that, even considering the occasional Scrapper like Corn Elder, here, who actually plays exceptional Run Defense, is optimally deployed one-dimensionally ~ in Pass Heavy Situations ~ and as such I believe warrants Discounting.

Even so, Corn Elder is, within that narrow Context, a remarkable Prospect. I don't think that you want'm out there, mixing it up in or even near The Trenches, very often, if you want'm to last a few Years, but his remarkable capacity to block effectively adds rare Value to his Skill Set, because, unlike most Slot Corners, he has no Weaknesses.

Agility: Competitive. Awesome Speed. Awful Fluidity.

Processing Speed: Marginal.

Run Defense: Competitive, with Potential. Strong Power, WingSpan, and Motor, but poor Field Vision and Combat Skills.

Pass Coverage: Competitive, potentially excellent in Press Coverage. That's a strange thing to say about a Short Dude like Myrick, I understand, but I believe that his Power, WingSpan, and Speed are potentially perfect for it.

Catch Point Capacity: Mediocre, but with Potential, if he can harness his WingSpan, Power, and Vertical Agility.

Jaylen Myrick ~ Prospectus

Heh. Funny Prospect, Jalen Myrick.

His Height is that'f a Slot Corner. But his Fluidity sucks, so that's a NoGo.

And his Dimensions are those'f a RoverBack at 200 Pounds...But his ludicrous Speed would be largely wasted.

So I'm going with CornerBack ~ Press Corner, of course ~ because he's Short, but he's definitely not Small.

He is Dirt Raw, but his combination of Speed, Power, and WingSpan are unusual but elite.

That's worth a pretty substantial Bet, as I see things.

Brian Allen ~ Scouting Report

Agility: Impressive and potentially phenomenal. There is an enormous Gap, here, between Allen's Raw Agility and his Functional Agility, as exhibited by Combine Numbers and Tape. But as he is a recent Convertible from WideOut to CornerBack, and is therefore still in the Process of integrating Mind & Body, there is a legitimate Chance that his spectacular Combine Fluidity Metrics will in fact translate to the Field of Battle in the next few Years.

Processing Speed: Mediocre. His Instincts are Dog Raw. How they come along is a matter of Pure Speculation.

Run Defense: Mediocre. WingSpan and Speed, but shaky Motor and Combat Skills.

Pass Coverage: Mediocre. Potentially dominant. He has a sensational WingSpan and excellent Speed, so the Potential is there to dominate in Press Coverage, and he's got the Raw Fluidity to potentially excel in Off Coverage, as well.

Catch Point Capacity: Ditto. WingSpan, Raw Power, Vertical Launch, all there. Time & Training are what're needed. Lots.

Brian Allen ~ Prospectus

Yep. Brian Allen is pretty much the quintessential Tools Prospect, a recent WideOut Convertible with the Raw Speed, the Raw Power, the Raw Fluidity, and above all the WingSpan and Height to go to 12 consecutive Pro Bowls and be an eventual 1st Ballot Hall of Famer...if it all comes together!! High Ceiling, Low Floor, Ladies and Laddies.
