Russel redshirted in 2006 at Idaho State before starting as a RS freshman in 2007 and passing for 2,313 yards and 14 touchdowns on 176-of-300 passing.
In 2008, Russel started the first 10 games of the season for Idaho State, and completed 252 of 408 for 2,634 yards with 14 touchdowns.
In 2009, he passed for 1388 yards and 8 TDs despite missing major parts of the season due to a broken finger.
In 2010, he suffered through and injury-plagued year (left knee), missed a full game and split time in the many others, but still completed 92 of 204, for 1194 yards and 8 TDs, vs. 8 interceptions.
Strengths: Plays with some swagger when healthy. Has some tools and would've quite possibly looked better as a college QB with a stronger supporting cast. Good footwork. Can throw on the run. Throws a catchable ball. Can sidestep pressure and is pretty accurate when healthy. Above average overall accuracy and touch. Steps up nicely in the pocket and delivers the ball with a classic delivery. Had a great freshman and sophomore years, before injuries set in, and is now flying below the radar as a result. Plays through pain. Has some leadership abilities.
Weaknesses: Has been injury prone the past couple seasons, and isn't very big at all. Has never regained his freshman/sophomore form when he looked like a potential future late draft pick. Played with a bad left knee throughout major portions of the 2010 season and his accuracy suffered. Played with a bad thumb for large parts of the past two seasons. Will flutter some balls. WCO QB only, who has the look of a career 3rd-stringer or sub-league performer. Lacks deep ball placement, and a big league arm.
Projection: UDFA, who could surprise in camp if he gets completely healthy and his knee and thumb woes are finally behind him."
