Ball placement has a tendency to run hot and cold because of his poor footwork and doesn't consistently allow receivers to run after the catch because they are forced to adjust to his throws. Doesn't spin a real clean football either in the underneath pass game, as there is consistently a slight wobble to his passes. Does a better job when throwing the football in the intermediate pass game, but isn't as consistent with his throwing mechanics. Will drop his elbow down a bit at times and tends to short step and fall off throws down the field.
Is surprisingly a decent straight-line runner who isn't afraid to tuck the football down and make his way down the field. Isn't going to make anyone miss, but has a decent stride to eat up yards quickly once he gets his legs going and displays an above-average feel in the pocket. Is a bit limited going through his progressions. Has a tendency to only work one side of the field and will stare down his initial read and wait for him to uncover, forcing the ball into coverage at times. Throws blindly too often when trying to look off defenders and doesn't do a great job deciphering information and reading defenses.
Impression: Has a good arm, but is really inconsistent with his footwork and throwing mechanics depending on where he is throwing on the field. Isn't real impressive in his decision-making process and doesn't look like an NFL quarterback."
Positive: Nice-sized pocket passer with a solid arm. Sells ball fakes, patient, and buys time for receivers. Shows a sense of timing, throws a catchable ball, and effectively places passes where only his receivers can make the reception. Makes good choices in the pocket, displays excellent field vision, and lets receivers run to the ball.
Negative: Cannot drive deep passes. Occasionally stares down the primary target. Cannot pick up yards with his legs.
Analysis: After seeing minimal time his first three seasons on the college level, Roper picked up his game last year. He offers legitimate talent for the next level and is a free agent prospect who should be developed on a practice squad."
