He is a developmental prospect who has an incredible frame he can fill out as he embarks on an NFL career. He is a late-round prospect who could be taken earlier if a team can live with developing him and not expecting much as a rookie. He is an inconsistent player at this point in his career.
He barely showed up against Houston in the Ticket City Bowl and logged only one pass defensed -- a microcosm of his career at Penn State, where he generally just stood up and hoped to use his frame to knock down balls.
Unfortunately, he only did it once against Houston in the Ticket City Bowl, which would have been a prime opportunity against a smaller quarterback in Case Keenum. He has excelled here, however, throughout his career. He is an athletic for his position and it shows when he is running down cross-field plays.
He is adept at shedding his blocks and geting to the ball. For a raw player, he has a surprising feel working against the run game. He struggles against the pass and is still developing his technique to be more effective there, but his frame gives him plenty of potential.
Once there, he is disruptive and effective, but he could be a deer in headlights early on at the next level. He is not very quick off the ball and will need to continue to develop his speed and burst. He looks nice but can't really burst in short areas to get to the quarterback and finish the play."
Doesn't possess a real sophisticated pass-rushing arsenal as he consistently tries to reach the corner, working his club move to the outside. But even if he gains a step, he struggles to drop his shoulder and fails to really bend around the corner.
Is routinely pushed past the pocket and doesn't have the type of fluidity/short area quickness to work any kind of sudden change of direction move. Doesn't play with consistent leverage either and despite his natural power at this stage isn't a real effective bull rusher because of pad level.
Is inconsistent vs. the run game as well. Has the ability to gain leverage on contact vs. the run at times and uses his natural power to set the edge and get a push into the backfield. However, gets upright when looking to disengage and can be sealed from the play. Is still learning how to use his hands.
Possesses long arms and at times can be violent/sudden on contact. However, too often his high pad level takes away from his balance, which minimizes his ability to be sudden/powerful when trying to shed.
Looks to lumber in space. Isn't overly instinctive when asked to close and despite his above-average work rate doesn't make a ton of plays in pursuit.
Impression: A big, strong defensive end prospect who still has some upside to his game. But won't be able to take that next step until he learns to play with a more consistent pad level. A size prospect worth developing long term."
Is not explosive and lacks flexibility and variety to threaten the edge as a rusher.
Needs to learn how to drop his anchor against the run and use his hands to defeat blocks.
Plays hard, loves football and works at it, indicating he possesses untapped potential if he is able to overcome raw positional instincts.
Is a developmental left defensive end at this stage of his career."
Excellent athlete with good size and a long wingspan; has good quickness and adequate closing speed; also has good balance and body control and can plant and change direction; has a great motor and plays the game with a passion;
Lacks the footspeed to consistently run around the edge and has a limited number of pass rush moves; had just 2.5 sacks last fall after posting 5.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss the previous year, but was hampered by a foot injury much of the year and still wasn’t 100% this spring."
Negatives -- Is not a dynamic pass rusher, a straight-line type of athlete, gets too wide around the edge, has a limited number of pass rushing moves, lacks the flexibility to dip his shoulder around the corner and can't consistently threaten the edge... Plays upright, impeding his balance and minimizing his ability to disengage from blocks, needs to improve technique, including hand usage, can be pushed out of the play if he doesn't maintain good pad level, can also get pushed around a bit in the run game... Does not have great instincts, takes too long to diagnose plays and doesn't make many plays in pursuit, perhaps a result of football inexperience... Despite having the size of a 3-4 OLB, doesn't appear to have the flexibility or body control to play in space, doesn't have fluid hips or footwork necessary to make the switch, slow and choppy change of direction agility, was not given the opportunity to drop into coverage at Penn State... Very raw, frustrating and inconsistent player with the physical tools to succeed but he hasn't put it all together and pretty much everything he does well is negated due to poor pad level... Scheme limited, strictly a 4-3 left defensive end... Minor durability concerns, injured right foot forced him to miss three games during 2010 season."
