Showcases decent bend in his drop off the line and tries to stay patient when working in man coverage. However, isn't real fluid or clean with his footwork, seems very choppy and erratic and lacks ideal balance. Is also tight in the hips when asked to redirect and close on the football. Allows his pad level to quickly pop up, struggles to quickly regain balance and gives up a lot of separation in and out of his breaks.
Possesses good ball skills and body control when he puts himself around the action, but needs to get his hands on receivers off the line in order to hold his own in coverage. Doesn't look fluid or rangy enough to consistently make plays on the football in the deep half either.
Showcases a willingness to stick his head in and tackle in the run game. However, doesn't routinely take the best angles when working up the field in pursuit. Will overrun the football, struggles to consistently break down and isn't the most instinctive or aware of defensive backs.
Impression: A big, physical kid who wants to get his hands on you, but isn't real effective in man coverage or space and will have a tough time making a roster because of it."
Positive: Skilled defensive back who makes a lot of positive plays on the ball. Effective in man coverage, runs downfield with opponents, then reads receivers' eyes and gets his head back around to make a play on the ball. Gets vertical, adjusts in midair, and effectively defends or intercepts passes. Can stay with receivers out of breaks, has a burst to the ball, and plays a physical game. Displays good recognition of routes in zone coverage. Gives effort defending the run.
Negative: Struggles in battles and gets outmatched by opponents. Was Nebraska's nickel back and never a true starting cornerback.
Analysis: Gomes is a terrific defensive back who offers a variety of polished skills. He will do well in nickel and dime packages at the next level."
2009 -- Emerged to play in 13 contests with six starts. Played in the slot and at both corner and safety. Honorable Mention All-Big 12 selection.
Strengths: Like teammate Eric Hagg, functions as a rover in Nebraska's 4-2-5 defense, and is critical to its success. Good size and well built. Tough and physical, with good quickness and change of direction skills. Attacks the run and tackles hard. Good instincts and shows up all over the field. Solid in man coverage and breaks up passes. Has lined up at LB, CB, in the slot and at both safety positions.
Weaknesses: Kind of a 'tweener; not a pure corner or safety. Stout and physical but not very large, and plays a very physical game, so there is a question over how long he will hold up. Likely a free safety or slot corner, but lacks top-end speed.
Projection: Tough, scrappy football player will make someone's squad as a fourth-seventh rounder. There is some debate as to what position he will play and some question his polish after playing only two years of major college ball, but he'll be nearly impossible to cut."
At first he came in off the bench, but Gomes ended up starting six of the last nine contests. And by the end of the season, the stout Nebraska defense would not have been nearly as productive without him. Gomes finished his junior campaign with 46 tackles, four interceptions and three forced fumbles. His senior year was even more productive. Gomes continued to make big plays, intercepting three passes and forcing two fumbles, but he also turned into a fine tackler and totaled 99 tackles on the season.
Gomes played some linebacker at Nebraska when the situated warranted such things, but his future is at strong safety. However, Gomes is quick enough and has strong enough coverage skills to play corner as well. It will depend on the system, but some NFL team can mold Gomes into the player they want. Yet, that versatility is also a negative as Gomes is not a perfect fit as a strong safety in many systems and that is one reason he will likely not get drafted until the late rounds."
