However, exhibits a good feel vs. zone, gets his head around quickly and does a nice job extending his arms and plucking the football. Is limited after the catch, though, and doesn't display much in the form of physicality or burst in the open field.
Does a nice job getting out to the second level as a blocker and works hard to seal down the field. However, struggles to maintain balance and consistently break down into contact. Isn't a real physical in-line guy and isn't going to drive anyone off the snap at the next level. But, is a decent short area athlete who keeps his pads down, extends his arms and can stick to blocks initially while sealing from the play.
Impression: Isn't a real physical blocker or explosive athlete and just isn't dynamic enough in either area to warrant an NFL roster spot."
Positive: Solid pass-catching tight end with average size/speed numbers. Quickly releases off the line into routes, nicely adjusts to the errant throw, and makes the reception in stride. Makes the difficult reception in a crowd and holds onto the ball. Extends his hands offering the quarterback a nice target, consistently lays out or works to make the tough catch. Displays quickness into pass routes and stays low on exit.
Negative: Does not block with good fundamentals and shows poor strength at the point of attack. Lacks footwork in pass protection and cannot help out against speed rushers.
Analysis: Franklin comes off a solid season and put himself back on the map as a free agent prospect. He offers potential as a backup move tight end who will be most effective when put in motion before the snap."
Strengths: Looks the part of an NFL TE. Big, tall, strong and athletic. Good speed and quickness, and fine agility/body control. Can make the spectacular catch. Turns upfield quickly and gains positive yardage. Versatile; lines up in the slot and on the end of the line as a true TE. Mostly used on short routes but shows the ability to stretch the field. Willing blocker who will employ different techniques and strategies (screening, cutting and occasionally attempting to maul). Much-improved overall in 2010.
Weaknesses: Raw player who didn't do much prior to 2010. Needs work running routes and may initially have trouble getting off the line in the NFL. Not a great blocker and needs work in this department, but doesn't shy away from the duty.
Projection: Late-round pick or free agent who's best ball is still in front of him. Might have to serve time on the practice squad, but has the tools to suit up and contribute on Sundays."
