Binns earned a starting job in 2009 as a sophomore with 13 starts, finishing with 63 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 9 passes broken up.
As part of a deep defensive line, he was only a rotational starter in 2010 as a junior, recording 36 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, 1 forced fumble, 2 passes broken up and 1 interception (returned for a score).
Binns started every game in 2011 as a senior (13 starts), finishing with 60 tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception and 8 passes broken up, earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors.
Binns emerged as a sophomore, but struggled to standout as part of a crowded defensive line last year and had a very average season in 2011 without defensive end Adrian Clayborn lined up opposite him.
He does a nice job using his eyes to recognize and locate the ball, showing a knack for knocking down passes at the line of scrimagge despite his short stature (21 career passes broken up).
Binns has very average size, length and strength and is a limited athlete with poor get-off explosion, but he plays disciplined with a relentless motor ~ late round base defensive end, but it will be tough for him to stick on a team with his limited ability to create pressure on the pocket.
Strengths: Has good football speed with a nonstop motor and relentless pursuit of the ballcarrier. Plays with very good effort and doesn't give up, battling off blocks to the play. A smart, disciplined defender, keeping his eyes elevated and recognizing what the offense plans to do ~ stays at home and holds contain.
Very good awareness with the knack for elevating his hands in the passing lanes for deflections (21 career passes broken up!) ~ tipped a pass to himself in the bowl game for the interception. Has a stout base to hold his own at the point of attack with the strong hands to secure tackles.
Has good playing experience, starting at both left and right end at Iowa and gets the most out of his ability, using veteran moves and playing intelligent.
Weaknesses: Lacks ideal height, length and overall frame for the position ~ short and doesn't have the chiseled body type ideal for the position. Has limited athleticism and range, lacking natural explosion or first step burst to consistently threaten the edge. Not a quick-twitch athlete or naturally flexible ~ short-area player.
Doesn't have a consistent counter pass rush move after initially stopped ~ doesn't get enough pressure on the pocket. Lacks the hand power to disengage blocks at the point of attack. Had only moderate production over his career and never led the team in sacks or tackles for loss at Iowa ~ won't be a fit for everyone.
Will need to answer some questions about a July 2010 arrest for DUI.

Does have a tendency to get a bit upright when trying to disengage and lacks ideal fluidity in the hips and short area quickness to disengage. But finds the football well, can set the edge on the outside and works hard playing the piano down the line. Isn’t real rangy in pursuit however, displays a good motor but only average closing speed.
Sits a little high into his stance when rushing the passer and allows his pad level to get a bit upright when trying to threaten the edge. Displays an average first step, but isn’t a guy who is going to turn the corner and is more of a contact rusher. Looks too tight to drop pad level and flatten out around the edge while keeping his balance.
However, does do a nice job dropping his pad level into contact when working the bull rush. Exhibits good hand placement and generates a pop on contact. Also, displays some natural balance and short area quickness when trying to slip the block following his punch to the edge. Generates good separation from contact and can side step blocks laterally.
But needs to routinely collect himself before closing with his average burst because of some stiffness. Will drop off into coverage at times and does possess good coordination off the line. However, just isn’t real sudden in space, especially when trying to avoid a blocks, as he routinely gets cut down easily on contact and fails to use his arms well enough to keep himself clean.
Was suspended for the opener in 2010 due to an alcohol related incident.
Impression: Plays with natural leverage/power in the run and pass game. Isn’t a dynamic athlete, but finds the football, uses his length well and can work his way into a rotation in the NFL."
Long arms for his size, gets good pop on his hand punch, natural power and length, gets his hands up in passing lanes when he can't get to the quarterback... Binns generally plays with a good base and low center of gravity... Plays the run well; very good stack and shed type player with strong upper half when working against fullbacks and tight ends...
Has the strength to anchor, improved versus the run from last year... Disciplined in backside pursuit, holds the edge reasonably well and maintains outside containment... Good balance and change of direction agility; good piano player, maintains his ground while moving down the line to the ball...
Plays with a good motor and finds the football well, reliable wrap-up tackler; shows good discipline, has a high football IQ and is a good on-field leader; member of Iowa's leadership group in '09 and '10 and received coaches' appreciation award for 2009... Has experience dropping off into coverage; good straight-line speed, has the COD agility of a linebacker, good ball skills, plays well in space and should eventually adjust to playing 3-4 OLB.
Negatives -- Undersized for a defense end and not stout enough to line up at defensive tackle; a bit of a tweener that doesn't have a true position and may need time to adjust to playing 3-4 OLB... Doesn't collapse the pocket on a consistent basis; tends to get too upright when disengaging and trying to threaten the edge...
First step and initial quickness is just average; has good snap instincts but only average closing speed...
Had never been a full-time starter until the 2011 season due to playing behind an extremely talent defensive line over the previous few years at Iowa... Was charged with drunken driving in July, 2010 and was subsequently suspended for the 2010 season opener."
