Now, he does do a nice job setting up his routes and has some savvy to his game in the pass game. But isn't real shifty/explosive when asked to get out of his breaks and doesn't generate much separation for himself on any level of the field.
Builds up speed as he goes and the further down the field he gets the tougher he is to cover. But, isn't real sudden or physical off the line and isn't a guy who will be able to beat press coverage at the next level. Struggles to create yards after the catch and goes down easily on initial contact.
Impression: Possesses a nice-sized frame, but isn't a guy who will be able to consistently separate vs. NFL-caliber defensive backs."
Positive: Average-sized possession receiver with reliable hands. Comes back to the quarterback to make himself an available target, adjusts to the errant throw, and makes the reception in stride. Consistently extends his hands and makes catches away from his frame.
Negative: Displays minimal burst and is marginally effective running after the catch.
Analysis: Kelly offers adequate size and the pass-catching skills to get consideration as a fifth receiver in the NFL."
Austin never redshirted at Duke and as a true freshman he played in all 12 games with three starts in '07 as a true freshman and finished tied for fourth on the team with 15 receptions for 186 yards and one TD.
In 2008, he put up 13 catches for 132 yards, and was injured for a good part of the season.
In 2009, he had his break out year, collecting 54 passes for 625 yards with 4 TDs.
Slipped back some in 2010 with starting only 6 games and grabbing 47 balls for 486 yards and 4 TDs.
Strengths: Possession type with nice big body and good hands. Young with upside. Snatches the ball cleanly and goes. Willing to cross the middle. Takes a hit and holds on. Has some nice subtle separation moves at the LOS.
Weaknesses: Was never really able to take advantage of his opportunities while fighting injuries, and as a result lost reps to Vernon and Varner who both outplayed him this past season. Glider who sometimes coasts on running plays. May be in the coach's doghouse as they made a big deal of him starting (and performing very well) in the senior day game v. UNC. Not explosive off the blocks. Will never be a real deep threat.
Projection: Solid, young possession guy with upside, who has been laboring in the shadows at Duke. Should be a late rounder or a priority UDFA whose hands give him a shot."
