Isn’t a real physical linebacker, as he’s more of a run and hit guy who really struggles to take on blocks when run at and can be easily sealed from the play. Doesn’t understand how to extend his arms and use his hands yet to shed blocks. Consistently leads with his shoulder when taking on blocks downhill and struggles to quickly disengage and use his range to make plays off his frame. Exhibits decent power on contact for his size when asked to set the edge, but isn’t a guy who will be able to do the same in the NFL. Lacks ideal instincts and doesn’t quickly decipher run/pass keys. Takes too many false steps when trying to read the action and can be slow to anticipate plays.
Impression: Possesses intriguing natural athletic ability, but hasn’t put it all together at this stage. Looks more like a run/hit linebacker with some pass rush ability. However, his size really limits his ability to potentially play as a 3-4 OLB/nickel rusher in the NFL. Will need to make his mark on special teams, as he looks like a fringe roster guy."
Positive: Athletic weak side linebacker prospect who is effective making plays in space. Fast in all areas of the field, makes plays in every direction, and covers a good amount of space. Breaks down well, rarely gets knocked off his feet, and is relatively strong at the point of attack. Effective in pursuit, explosive, and flashes ability in coverage.
Negative: Has just average instincts and is late to react. A bit stiff flipping his hips in transition.
Analysis: Moten has flashed ability the past two years and is effective as a pursuit linebacker that can also cover. He must polish his game but he has some upside."
Negatives: Does not have great awareness when scraping sideline-to-sideline, will fall victim to crackback blocks and cut blocks, needs to do a better job of protecting his legs in traffic... Could stand to add some bulk to his frame, appears a little on the thin side... Will miss tackles when moving laterally along the line, sometimes over-pursues and gets out of position against shiftier backs... Is not a big hitter, generally wraps up low and slides to the ankles, Has only forced two fumbles in his career... Has never been a huge producer, only 200 total tackles in four years.
Weaknesses: Not a great tackler. Sometimes forgets to keep his head up. May struggle head up against big backs. Has stretches of some games where he seem to disappear, but that may be because of the Maryland scheme where he was not funneled any action and was asked to drop and cover a lot. Not an elite athlete, and does not have eye popping physical characteristics. May be good enough to start, but may never be the guy you hang your hat on.
Projection: Solid late pick."
