Fortunately for the Steelers, I'm just some Dumb Ass scribbling a Blog ~ not a well-trained, seasoned Scout.
But if I was a professional Scout, I'd have this to say...
Jarvis Jones has been phenomenally productive in'is two Years at Georgia, and I understand that many Players have enjoyed long, productive Careers despite Spinal Stenosis, which Jones has recently been diagnosed with.
But I see a College Star who projects to be a weakness in Run Defense, a weakness in Pass Defense, and far less of a Force in the Pass Rush than the vast majority of Pundits seem to expect'm to be.
His lack of Core Strength & Lateral Agility could get'm killed in Run Defense, his lack of Instincts and Lateral Agility could get'm killed in Pass Defense...and his lack of Core Strength or any kind of Repertoire could kill'is Pass Rush.
I'm putting'm on Bust Alert.
2 ~ HB LeVeon Bell of Michigan State @ #48 ~ Spectacular Reach!! I also gave him a 5th Round Grade!!
LeVeon Bell is a controversial Prospect, and one I could easily miss on by a mile. But here goes:
While I think he offers an exceptional blend of Power & Agility ~ and far better Acceleration than generally perceived ~ I think that'is Field Vision is highly suspect, and that his ability to Rapidly Read & React to Defenses might be an enormous stumbling block to'is Potential to succeed at The Next Level.
Next Year, I'm going to have to add a How I'm Most Likely To Be Wrong line to these Reports.
In the case of LeVeon Bell, that would simply read: Because I've underrated his Processing Speed & Diagnostic Acuity. And if I have ~ which is extremely possible ~ he could very well become an exceptional PowerBack.
But at #48???
3 ~ FL Markus Wheaton of Oregon State @ #79 ~ Ah! A Steal, in my view!! Gave'm a 1st Round Grade, I did!!
Markus Wheaton commands an outstanding Fusion of Top End Speed & Routing Expertise. He'll have some problems getting Off The Blocks against the best Press Corners, but he'll provide terrific FirePower to'is team.
4 ~ CB Terry Hawthorne of Illinois @ #150 ~ Great Pick!! Gave'm a 2nd Round Grade!!
Processing Speed ~ Dubious!! Often seemed a day late and a dollar short, last Year. But I gotta say that I am seriously tempted to discount that Impression for Hawthorne and for every last member of that Fighting Illini Defense, which played so well in 2011 and faded to Black, last Year. One gets the Impression ~ and this is utterly without Substantiation, mind you ~ that DC Tim Banks may've gotten ahead'f'is entire Crew with'is Schematics in'i 2nd Year, after a stunning and awesome Freshman Campaign with the Team. Again: Pure, unsubstantiated Speculation on my utterly uneducated and unqualified part. But they did look lost out there, the lot'f'm.
Verticity ~ Beautiful. Flips the Hips smoothly to Turn & Burn. And he's awesome in Press Coverage, as well.
Run Defense ~ Excellent. A real physical Player.
Terry Hawthorne will essentially RedShirt the 2013 Campaign, but I'd keep an eye out: It is rare to see a CornerBack display such impressive Verticity combined with such a rough, aggressive, physical style of play. Provided he's healthy, I see Terry Hawthorne playing at an high level for a very long time.
But I'm afraid that, despite the excellent Pick of Markus Wheaton in the 3rd Round, my unqualified, uneducated, and ultimately useless opinion is that both of their first two Picks ~ while either Prospect could very well forge spectacular Careers ~ were dramatic Reaches, regardless of what the General Consensus might be.
Terry Hawthorne saved this Draft, in my retroactive View. Whether or not he ever plays for'm is another matter!!
