Run Blocking ~ Already impressive, and rapidly improving.
Pass Blocking ~ Incredible Raw Athleticism, and learning fast. Phenomenal UpSide.
As much fun as I had, defenestrating last Year's Offensive Tackle Class, I'm having an even richer time, heaping Praise on this one: I would give the decided preference to Lane Johnson over Matt Kalil, who I ~ and most others ~ graded highest out'f that shockingly dubious bunch.
He's Raw, mind you, as one would of course expect'm to be: He's a very recent Tight End Convertible ~ to say nothing of'is amazing Resume, which includes not only Defensive End but QuarterBack!! ~ but is clearly a brilliant young Athlete who is rapidly improving and commands exhilarating UpSide!!
2 ~ XE Zach Ertz ~ Stanford Cardinal @ #35 ~ Reach!! A controversial Pick, I had'm ranked as a 3rd Rounder!!
Zach Ertz was Neck & Neck with Tyler Eifert for many Moons, at the top of Tight End Projections, before recently sliding, when Eifert pulled away with superior Scores at The Combine.
Frankly, I tend to think that Ertz never quite belonged at that level.
In this emerging Era of the Tight End, I think he commands extraordinary Potential, mind you. But unless he developes into more of a physical player ~ Blocking, getting Off The Blocks, breaking Tackles ~ I expect that he'll fall short of Greatness. Even so, I expect'm to develop into a dangerous Weapon in the Passing Game.
3 ~ DT Ben Logan ~ Louisiana State Tigers @ #67 ~ Reach!! Gave'm a 5th Round Grade!!
Logan has the Burst to play the classic 3 Tech, penetrate, make Splash Plays and rack up enough Glory Stats ~ meaning Sacks ~ to create the illusion of a Dominant Force...But I believe that on a Down to Down basis ~ and especially against the best Teams, Deep in the Dark of Winter, in The Only Games That Really Matter ~ his horrible Core Strength and terrible Fluidity & general Agility will get him run the Hell over.
4 ~ QB Matt Barkley ~ Southern California @ #98 ~ Solid Pick!! Gave'm a 4th Round Grade!!
Motor > No Red Flags, per se, but he seems to've peaked, and I have to wonder if it was Too Much Too Soon: Perhaps he thought he Had It Made. His Game seems to've taken a Step Back, this Year.
Accuracy > Outstanding on shorter Routes, but his Accuracy fades rapidly, the more developed the Route. It's unkind to say, but the more Time, the more Exposure, and the more Pressure, the less Accurate he becomes.
Diagnostics > Nobody at the College level makes better PreSnap Reads than Matt Barkley...before the Snap. But after the Snap: awful. It just feels like the Game is moving too fast for'm. He frequently locks on to his Primary Target, and often seems lost and confused when Defenses throw wrinkles at'm. And if he's having issues Rapidly Reading & Reacting to the PostSnap Action of PAC 10 Defenses ~ despite having the advantage of 4 years of experience in Southern California's System ~ then I have grave doubts about'is ability to adapt at the NFL level.
My impression of Matt Barkley is that he is ~ far beyond all other QuarterBacks in this Draft Class ~ mentally and emotionally prepared to take the helm of his team's Ship from the very first day and lead even a previously very bad team to immediate Respectability and perhaps even to Success, with a deep Supporting Cast...
But I don't envision'm leading them much further, even given 15 years to do so.
He just doesn't strike me as having the greatest Processing Speed, and I suspect that his Career Trajectory is going to feature impressive initial success, after which Defenses, having had an OffSeason to study NFL Tape of'm, will find his glaring weaknesses and exploit them, quite possibly with disastrous results for Barkley and'is Team.
He strikes me as a guy who will actually probably win the Starting job right out'f the gate...but then quite possibly lose in by the end of his First Contract. I call that an unusual & disturbing version of Potential Starter Grade.
With early Picks in each Round, the Eagles ~ with their first 3 Picks, including #04 ~ came up with a Mid 1st Rounder, a 3rd Rounder of dubious Merit, and a 5th Rounder of even more dubious Merit, in my jaded view.
Even their first solid Pick ~ Matt Barkley, ironically, who I'd projected to be one'f the hugest Reaches of the entire Draft, as he'd been a borderline 1st Round Projection ~ is of limited Long Term Value, as I see it.
There were some interesting Late Rounders & UFA's, but nobody I saw as highly intriguing.
