These are the Attributes I place greatest Emphasis on, in evaluating FlexBacks:
Power. Above all: Core Power. Upper body Strength is important, but lower body Strength, from the Knees to the Ribs, is absolutely crucial. An HalfBack's Capacity to break Tackles is more about Core Power than anything else.
Agility. Acceleration, Fluidity, and Ricochet. Long Speed is all well and good, but at the end of the day, it's Gravy. What wins Championships is Moving The Chains. And Moving The Chains is accomplished far better by guys who exhibit the Agility ~ and the Power ~ to consistently pick up 5 and sometimes 10 Yards at a time.
Processing Speed. Field Vision. That ethereal Capacity to Rapidly Read & React to the constantly transforming Tactical LandScape...and to foresee and envision Lanes developing before they actually do.
Blocking. Having an HalfBack who doesn't Block effectively is like having 10 Men on the Field of Battle.
Receiving. Even though FlexBacks are distinguished ~ at least in my fevered Imagination ~ by a certain Receiving Prowess, or at least the Potential for it, it won't usually be realistic to convey the depth of Analysis with their Receiving Capacities as I would with WideOuts, so I'll summarize the best of my Ability.
Power ~ Outstanding!! Relentlessly attacks the Defense, head on, and repeatedly barrels right through'm!!
Agility ~ Exceptional!! Impressive Fluidity and outstanding Ricochet!! Explosive Acceleration to the Line!!
Processing Speed ~ Tremendous. Absolutely tremendous Field Vision. Consistently makes the Right Read Rapidly.
Blocking ~ Hah!! Raw, but flashes terrific Potential, and is rapidly improving!!
Receiving ~ Ajayi was just an Outlet Option for the first half of this Campaign ~ his first as the Lead Back ~ but over the second half, he transformed first into a relied-upon Option, and then, over the final two weeks ~ I'm writing this previous to the Hawaii Bowl, of course ~ it all came together and he simply exploded!!
Beastocity Alert!! Check out the 00:24 Mark of Draft BreakDown's CutUp of the Air Force Game!!
Ajayi brings the most complete Game I've seen of any FlexBack in this entire Draft Class ~ should he in fact join it.
His combination of Power, Acceleration, and Agility is simply terrifying.
His Field Vision ~ his ability to Rapidly Read & React to the evolving Tactical LandScape before'm ~ is extraordinary.
And his Blocking ~ which seemed, at first, an Achilles Heel in'is early Taping ~ is rapidly improving.
I was worried about the way he carried the Ball, early on, but even that seems to be improving before my eyes.
In what few Games I've reviewed, so far, it was actually startling to see how refined Ajayi's Receiving Game has already become, in this, his first Year as the Lead Back: His Hands are soft, his Focus is outstanding, and his Anticipation and Reaction to Defenders is awesome. And this was before his BreakOut Games!!
The extraordinary Field Vision and the stunning Agility that he already displayed on the handful of Receptions I was able to view, combined with his outstanding Power and explosive Acceleration, made it clear, even on limited viewing, that he was an emerging Terror in the Passing Game...a Terror that has now already erupted!!
The fact that not a Soul seems to be talking about this guy is absolutely astonishing.
Thanks, as always, to the extraordinary Work by the men of Draft BreakDown!!
