DeAndre Hopkins is an extraordinary Split End Prospect.
This is the kind of Player who does the thousands of little things ~ and plenty of big things ~ that make the crucial Difference in the Championship Quest ~ the kind of Split End you pray for.
He's a Natural Born Leader, gets better every Year, and while he doesn't have the Long Speed that makes folks salivate, he will consistently Move The Chains, throw down Blocks, and make huge Plays when you need'm most.
Perhaps best of all, considering the notoriously lengthy Incubation Period of most "Wide Receivers":
He is ready to start on the OutSide today.
2 ~ SS Dayario Swearinger ~ South Carolina GameCocks @ #57 ~ Excellent Pick!! 2nd Round Ranking!!
Swearinger's Diagnostic Acuity is outstanding. He's a Field General, out there.
His Processing Speed, however, isn't nearly as impressive. He's sometimes a step late.
His Motor runs Hot & Cold, but it really seems like more'f a failure to manage himself than a Prima Donna thing: All Reports support the perception of a dedicated Gym Rat and a guy who burns through Tape and relentlessly drills all The Little Things. A Natural Leader, and a passionate, enthusiastic, inspiring one.
His propensity to go for the Hit instead of the Tackle is a concern, but his overall record as a diligent Student of the Game who not only persistently dedicates himself to the gritty work of Conditioning and Tape Reading, but inspires others to do so, and his Intelligence, his obvious Passion, and his evident Love for the Game persuade me that it's a smart Bet to make that he'll be responsive to Coaching and will take the appropriate steps to elevate his Game.
And if he does, he'll evolve into a formidable Force: A Terror in the Running Game who doesn't often hurt'is own Team, and an adept Coverage Safety who can stay on for all 3 Downs and Make Plays.
Dayario Swearinger would actually be perfect as a StrongSide Gryphon in The Yankee 245.
In the real world, though, he should make an exceptional Strong Safety...and perhaps an extraordinary one.
3 ~ OT Brennan Williams ~ North Carolina TarHeels @ #89 ~ Decent Pick. Gave'm a 4th/5th Round Ranking.
There's Athleticism, there, but dubious Core Strength, and of course medical concerns. Not an horrible Pick, though.
4 ~ DR Sam MontGomery ~ Louisiana State Tigers @ #95 ~ A little scary. Gave'm a 5th Round Ranking.
I love this crazy kid who tells it like it is!! And anyone who thinks ~ based on'is hilarious Faux Pas at the Combine ~ that he doesn't play with Fire & Enthusiasm has never watched a second of'is Tape!!
But this kid is a potential Disaster!!
I just think that the odds are that his atrocious Processing Speed, lack of Discipline & Focus, and the fact that this has translated into doing very few of the 100's of Little Things to refine'is Game over the years...spell Bust!!
But I'll be rooting for'm, anyway!!
5 ~ FD Trevardo Williams ~ Connecticut Huskies @ #124 ~ Nice Pick!! Gave'm a 3rd Round Ranking.
Trevardo Williams is actually very much a Mystery, in terms of how he projects as a Run Defender or Pass Rusher.
And those are about 80% of'is Job, at The Next Level.
But as a Pass Rusher, his Potential is extraordinary.
I'm murky on his Potential Career Arc, but excellent Processing Speed is a great start...
And as a Pass Rush Specialist early in'is Career ~ from the Sam, I'd think ~ he offer very intriguing Potential.
6 ~ TE Ryan Griffin ~ Connecticut Huskies @ #201 ~ Tremendous Pick!! Gave'm a 3rd Round Ranking!!
This could be an Epic Year for exceptional Tight Ends, Flex Ends, and WingBacks to fly Under The Radar.
Ryan Griffin is pretty raw as a Blocker, mind you: He needs a lot of work on'is Technique.
But he consistently displays terrific Launch Velocity, and a strong Punch: All he needs is Time & Coaching.
And as a Receiver, he is very intriguing, showcasing that outstanding Launch Velocity and impressive Paw Power to consistently win'is Release, and an advanced level of Routing Savvy and natural Fluidity to Separate.
Ryan Griffin is raw, but offers immense UpSide, and good reason ~ Intelligence & Drive ~ to bet on'm attaining it.
7 ~ XB Ray Graham ~ PittsBurgh Panthers ~ UFA ~ Outstanding Pick!!
Well, now, here's an interesting Prospect.
I believe that one of the greatest Potentials for seizing potentially phenomenal Assets at dramatically discounted Prices lies in the extraordinary Reality that most Pundits and ~ remarkably ~ most NFL Personnel Decision Makers, most definitely including most Coaches and General Manager, blithely ignore the historical reality that most major Injuries require 12-18 months for the Player to heal and strengthen sufficiently to regain their former Form.
The result of this is that we now have a Prospect, Ray Graham ~ who was correctly considered to be an incredibly Elusive HalfBack 18 months ago ~ is being judged by the world at large based on'is relatively pedestrian 2012 Season, and on his Mediocre "40" Time at the Combine...with no regard to what he might again become.
Don't get me wrong: I presume nothing about'is Health, nor, more to the point, to what extent he'll be able to recover his amazing former Form. And there's a bit too many Moves in'is Arsenal, and not enough DownHill, either in'is Core Strength or in'is Tactics, to inspire overwhelming confidence that he'll be consistently effective.
What it boils down to, for me, is that he does not project as a Feature Back ~ even if that were a good idea ~ because he's a bad Blocker and he's an ineffective interior Runner...
But as a FlexBack ~ a Runner or Receiver in Space ~ he should be at the very least adequate and ~ if he does recover his Former Form ~ he could become extraordinary.
