I actually like the guy, and I place far greater Value than most on Interior Linemen...But 1st Round???
Run Blocking ~ A load to handle in a Man Scheme, blocking straight ahead, but any time he needs to Pull or Trap, or even get UpField, I'm going to have serious concerns. His Lateral Agility is horrendous, and his Fluidity is awful. Even in a Man Scheme, I have serious doubt about'is ability to succeed at The Next Level.
Pass Blocking ~ Better, here, as he displays tremendous Core Strength. Even so, his awful Fluidity and horrendous Lateral Agility is going to cause'm enormous problems with Stunts and such and even straight up.
Travis Frederick brings an Ocean of Intelligence to the table, and in that regard was absolutely born to play Center.
Where I have my doubts, are with the Athletic Aspects of'is Game: I don't see the exceptional levels of Fluidity or Lateral Agility ~ or the Burst upfield ~ that speaks to great success at the next level, in my view.
His Core Strength, on the other hand, is superior, as is'is ability to project Drive Power on the Attack.
Does he possess enough Athleticism to play Center exceptionally at the next level, or would he be best served kicking back to Offensive Guard, whence he came? Many evaluators that I've read and respect lean to the latter.
Me, I'm not so sure. Frankly, I believe that the dubious Athleticism that I see on Tape will limit him at any position.
And I also believe, on the upside, that his superior Core Strengths and Drive Power would prove very useful at Center, because I believe that the Market Share of the 344 Defenses will only continue to increase, which will in turn continue the trend towards Defenses fielding SuperBeast Nose Tackles.
But I have grave doubts about'is ability to excel at the next level, due to his frankly awful Athleticism.
2 ~ XE Gavin Escobar ~ San Diego State Aztecs @ #47 ~ Aggressive yet excellent Pick!! 1st Round Ranking!!
Gavin Escobar is a classic New Age Tight End ~ a Flex End, to employ my own NomenClature ~ who shouldn't spend much time In Line and should probably only block in Combinations or against CornerBacks...but who commands an intoxicating Receiving Skill Set ~ absolutely beautiful Routing & Separation Skills combined with extraordinary Hands ~ that should make him a very dangerous Receiving Weapon, and quite soon.
3 ~ SE Terrance Williams ~ Baylor Bears @ #74 ~ Reach!! Gave'm a 4th Round Ranking!!
And, frankly, reaching for such a dubious Talent in an incredibly rich Wide Out Draft Class is doubly awful.
Terrance Williams brings exceptional Vertical skills to the table, but his Routing is Raw, he has problems getting Out'f The Blocks against physical Corners, and he lacks Fluidity or Ricochet in Traffic.
He's tall, though, and if he gets lucky with a good QuarterBack and an exceptional WideOut or two to draw men away and leave'm in Single Coverage, he may put up some numbers.
But he doesn't strike me as a very good Bet.
4 ~ FD DeVonte Holloman ~ South Carolina GameCocks @ #185 ~ Enormous Steal!! 2nd Round Ranking!!
DeVonte Holloman is a bit'f a Projection ~ aren't they all?? ~ because he's been a Safety all'is College Career until last Year, and even then he was more'f an Hybrid...But I think he brings an exhilarating Fusion of Diagnostic Acuity, Processing Speed, Discipline, and incredible Verticity. And I think he'll develop into an excellent Run Defender.
In the 21st Century, Defenders who can match up effectively with Tight Ends, Flex Ends, & WingBacks are Gold.
But picking Justin Wilcox at #80 was, though very aggressive, a tremendous Move.
And they completely saved their Draft ~ in my view ~ but stealing Holloman in the 6th Round.
