Do you agree? I hope so, and propose to break them down into 2 simple Categories, so we know what we're taking about:
Grizzlies ~ Enormous and Powerful Defensive Tackles noted for taking up Multiple Blockers and dominating the Middle.
Wolves ~ Smaller and Athletic Defensive Tackles noted for penetrating the BackField and for their Range.
When evaluating all Defensive Tackles, these are the Attributes to which I pay most particular attention:
Power. Above all: Core Power. Upper body Strength is important, but Core Power, from the Knees to the Ribs, is absolutely crucial. All the upper body strength in the world still fails if you can't dig in your heels. But Core Power enables a Lineman to project Power in the Running Game and to reject Power in the Passing Game. And those Players who invest the time and effort to develop superior Core Power are far likelier to enjoy sustained good Health and stay on the Field.
Agility. Lateral Velocity, Acceleration, and above all: Fluidity or Core Agility. Core Agility is even more essential to sustained good Health ~ and to sustained good FootBall ~ than Core Power. The ability to react with Serpentine smoothness is a tremendous asset in all Aspects of the Game, and certainly in the Hand to Hand Combat that characterizes Trench Warfare. All the Power in the World goes only so far if you're stiff and lumbering out there.
Combat Skills. Mechanics. Launch Velocity, Paw Power, and Technique.
Intangibles. Diagnostic Capacity, Processing Speed, and Motor. How effectively he masters Spatial Diagnostics & Angles, how rapidly he recognizes and implements Blocking Schemes based on changing Defensive Tactics, and of course: Drive. How badly he wants it. These are of course difficult things to assess, but it's crucial to at least try to.
Agility. Amazing. Terrific Launch Velocity, outstanding Fluidity, and extraordinary Lateral Velocity. Flies all over the Field. A Penetrator adept at shooting Gaps and also at employing his remarkable Fluidity to slip Blocks. Best of all, though, his extraordinary Lateral Velocity consistently enables him to cover a startlingly wide swath of Territory.
Combat Skills. Technically raw, but exhibiting persistently frenetic Combat Tactics and fantastic Paw Power. With continued refinement and further development of his burgeoning Repertoire of Pass Rush Moves, those active Hands should serve him well and enable him to transform into an exceptional Technician. In fact, I strongly suspect that he'll prove to be one of those unusual cases of a Prospect who proves to be a much more effective Pass Rusher as a Pro than as a Student.
Intangibles. Superior. I'm especially impressed that one Year ago both his Launch Velocity and Mechanics were weaknesses, while now the Launch Velocity is an enormous strength, and his Mechanics are tremendously improved. The greatly improved Launch Velocity speaks not to increased Agility, of which he already had plenty, but to his apparently investing considerable time and effort into developing a far more instinctive understanding of Snap Counts. Likewise, his tremendous technical improvement supports the idea that this is a smart kid who Does The Work.
I always preach Trajectory, which is my term to encompass both a Prospect's Upside and the Probability of'is attaining it.
And Timmy Jernigan, both in transforming his Launch Velocity from a weakness into a strength and also in the emphatic improvement in his Pass Rushing Repertoire, has exhibited a voracious Will To Win, the Work Ethic to do whatever is required to attain his Goals, and the Cerebral Capacity to apply what his Coaches are teaching him effectively.
That may seem like a simple Concept, but it seems to me that many folks lack one or all three of those.
Jernigan has thus provided evidence, in a word, that he's got The Right Stuff to make the most of his Talents.
And his Talents are...considerable.
I believe that he's going to become a tremendous Run Defender at The Next Level, and, in time, a disruptive Pass Rusher.
Thanks, as always, to the extraordinary Work by the men of Draft BreakDown!!
