My Notion of a great Offensive Guard is one who commands exceptional:
Core Strength to thwart the onslaught of marauding Defensive Tackles in the Passing Game
Drive Power to attack same Defensive Tackles and drive them back ~ or aside ~ in the Running Game
Launch Velocity out'f'is Stance, off the Snap
Fluidity to Redirect Quickly & Effectively
Burst ~ Short Speed ~ to drive across the Flank on Pulls & Traps
Lateral Agility to Stay Square as he Mirrors his man
Combat ~ As in Hand to Hand: Dexterity, Technique, Ferocity & Stamina!!
Core Strength, Core Power, and Fludity are most prominent in my view, when studying Offensive Guards. Launch Velocity and Lateral Agility are very important, too...But above all, my notion of a Dream Guard would be on who combines all these traits with exceptional Burst ~ a truly Athletic Offensive Guard who can run Power Sweeps all day long, as Jerry Kramer and Fuzzy Thurston did with Vince Lombardi's Packers, on their way to 5 Championships in 7 glorious years!!
Pass Blocking ~ Phenomenal Athleticism, Intelligence, and Motor. Developmental Core Strength.
Tretter is raw, naturally, and he still has work to do on'is Core Strength, as it was only two years ago that he made the move to Offensive Tackle, before which he weighed 250 Pounds!! But the Frame is there to build on, and he's already proven that he'll do whatever it takes to succeed. The Motor on this kid is phenomenal.
What he already brings to the table is outstanding Lateral Agility, a terrific Burst off the Snap, startling Diagnostic Capacity and Processing Speed ~ considering his inexperience ~ and both the Frame to develop not only adequate but exceptional Core Strength and Core Power and a fanatical Work Ethic that assures me he will do precisely that.
Tretter will need to develop, of course, but if he gets the right coaching, I don't think it'll take anywhere near as long for'm to develop into a Starter as most folks seem to think...and I'm betting that he becomes a very good one.
SuperSleeper!!
