Isn’t the most fluid of athletes and will struggle to maintain balance when asked to quickly change directions. But showcases good pop when asked to lunge into blocks off his frame and can still create a seal for his running back inside. Plays till the whistle and always seems to be working to push the pile, a real team-first guy. Looks comfortable in blitz pick-up as well, quickly locating his target and moving his feet through contact.
Also, can catch the football out of the backfield, but isn’t a real natural plucker and is more of a linear guy with the ball in his hands. However, he can be a solid safety valve out in the flat.
Now, physically he isn’t the most dominant guy when asked to drive defenders off the ball and overwhelm them at the point of attack. Possesses good, not great, strength for the position, but relies more so on his coordination, hands and grit to get into blocks and seal in the run game.
Impression: A really impressive fullback who understands angles, has a great feel inside and consistently is able to get into blocks and eliminate his man on contact. Looks like a starting caliber lead guy in the NFL from day one and is one of my favorite fullback prospects in the draft."
Positive: Tough, hard-nosed player who does the little things well. Plays heads-up football, helps the quarterback sell ball fakes and shows great awareness on the field. Bends his knees, breaks down well, and can get around tackle as a lead blocker. Strong enough to turn defenders from the action or stays square to engulf opponents. Solid receiver who nicely adjusts and looks the ball into his hands. Remains disciplined with coverage assignments at linebacker, effectively diagnoses the action, and stacks well against the run.
Negative: Lacks overall quickness and speed. Cannot create space for running backs. Marginal offensive threat.
Analysis: Marecic is a throwback who played two ways as a senior and gets the most from his ability. He's a hard-nosed football player who may never be a star but will help an NFL roster in a variety of ways."
Negatives: Limited as a runner and receiver because of his lack of physical gifts, relies mostly on effort... Slow and doesn't have much experience running the football... Has trouble getting tough yards in short yardage situations... Below-average route runner... Does not have a high ceiling."
Weaknesses: Does not possess great athletic ability. Good but not great strength, Marecic will find it difficult to root out bigger linebacker at the next level. Not much of a threat as a runner. As a receiver, he will not be able to separate from linebackers in man coverage because of his limited athleticism.
Projection: Fourth rounder. Marecic's toughness, intelligence, and blocking ability will give him a chance to start from day one as a fullback."
On the other side of the ball Marecic has started all 12 games and tallied 45 tackles. Marecic has a nose for the ball and has broken up five passes this season and picked off two. He will even occasionally get into the backfield and do some damage.
The big question is where does Marecic fit in the NFL? He is really a fullback, but he is also one heck of a special teams player who can make plays no matter what the situation may be. For an NFL team that actually uses a fullback, Marecic will be a steal in the fourth or fifth round."
Owen Marecic is absolutely One Of A Kind.
As a starting Full Back AND Mid Fielder ~ that's Middle LineBacker, to you Earthlings ~ Owen Marecic brings an utterly inspiring love of the Game to the table. Ultimately, it seems unlikely that he'll be much more than a Full Back at the Pro level...But you never know.
Marecic is a Neo Classic Full Back, by which I mean: a Blocking specialist who runs or catches the ball every once in a while. The Classic Full Back ~ unlike Marecic ~ did all three more or less equally, but the Game continues to evolve, and there has grown a dramatic difference in skill sets between a bull dozing Lead Blocker like Marecic, on the one hand, and a Classic Full Back like Stan Havili, who is more or less equally involved with all three aspects.
Of course, fewer and fewer teams even deploy the more specialized Lead Blocker types, like Marecic, and it may well be that his is a dying breed. A Full Back who is not a true Running threat ~ and perhaps only a marginal Receiving threat ~ may make his team's play calling too predictable. It may well be that in the very near future, all Full Backs will have to either evolve ~ or devolve? ~ into the Class Full Service Full Back, or seek another line of work.
Given that, Owen Marecic is, as the Game currently plays, an invaluable Warrior: A Lead Blocker of sufficient Power but exceptional Technique: a Technician who's outstanding Processing Speed, passionate Work Ethic, Dedication to his team, insatiable Passion, and unrelenting Tenacity make for a Force whose effect on his teammates and on the Enemy DWARFS that which his talent level ought warrant.
