Lacks a great first step off the edge as a pass rusher, coils up well into his stance, but just isn’t much of a quick-twitch athlete. However, does a good job using his hands to keep his legs clean off the snap and does exhibit good short-area quickness when rushing the passer. Has the ability to be sudden in tight areas, quickly changes directions/speeds and can gain a step on opposing tackles both inside and out. He extends his hands well into contact and does a nice job using his swat to keep linemen from getting a hold of him. But, even when he does gain a step, his pad level has a tendency to rise and he struggles to fight his way through the block and quickly surge into the backfield.
Impression: Displays some lateral quickness as a pass rusher and can gain a step in tight quarters. However, doesn’t play with a great pad level, isn’t a real explosive athlete and lacks ideal size for the position. Looks more like a training camp body."
Positive: Undersized college defensive end expected to stand up and play over tackle in the NFL. Breaks down well, plays with good pad level, and rarely knocked off his feet. Fluid getting out to the sidelines in pursuit, displays good quickness, and remains disciplined with assignments. Immediately changes direction and displays good movement skills. Effectively uses his hands to protect himself and shows speed off the edge.
Negative: Controlled at the point of attack or interrupted from his angle of attack by the first block. Showed just a short burst of speed last season and does not run well in the forty.
Analysis: Evans comes off a slightly disappointing season though he was rarely 100% as a senior. He proved to be a very good pass rushing prospect in 2009 and is a solid developmental linebacker for a 3-4 alignment."
Negatives: Not much of an arsenal... Doesn't generate much on contact with bull rush... Can shy away from contact... Needs to get heavier and play lower and with better leverage if he is going to stay at DE... Can be pushed out of plays... Looks a little awkward in his drops... Has committed some undisciplined penalties... Raw... Lacks FBS experience, started collegiate career at Los Angeles Harbor College... Did not improve off 12.5 TFL and six sacks in 2009, just 4/1.5 in 2010."
Weaknesses: Not a real quick twitch guy. Smallish for an NFL DE, and does not project as a solid POA guy against the run if left at 4-3 DE. Can be blocked, and struggles when rushing v. size, especially when looping towards the inside. Does his pass rush damage on the edge, and doesn't have a lot of variety in his toolkit. Looks like he doesn't really relish hard contact. May project to SAM, but there is no guarantee that experiment will work. Got to see the 3-cone number, and need to see him drop into coverage. Kind of a tweener at this stage.
Projection: 6-7th rounder, who is still raw and still developing, technique-wise. May be a transition guy (OLB) but it's a gamble..."
