However, as a pass rusher, he does a good job getting off the snap count on time and pressing the corner as an edge guy. Consistently is one if the first lineman moving off the football and showcases good natural explosion out of his stance. Is still learning how to use his hands into contact, but possesses some change of direction skills when trying to quickly work his way back inside. Displays the ability to consistently can gain a step on opposing linemen off the ball, but he still struggles to flatten out around the edge. Lacks the ability to routinely drop his pad level and dip his shoulder, and opposing linemen are consistently able to just push him past the quarterback and keep him from the play.
Impression: Isn’t a factor vs. the run game, but I’m not willing to write this kid off as an NFL prospect yet. He hasn’t played football very long and he definitely flashes the ability to rush the passer. Still has a long way to go, but there is some upside to his game as he’s a smart guy with good awareness off the snap."
Positive: Relatively athletic college defensive end coming off a disappointing season. Plays with a good degree of explosiveness, fires off the snap with a good first step, and breaks down well, keeping his pads low to the ground. Chases the action hard, strings plays out laterally, and covers a large amount of area on the field. Uses his hands to protect himself, wedges through blocks, and works hard.
Negative: Possesses just an average closing burst of speed. Easily out-positioned from the action by a single opponent.
Analysis: After a solid junior season, much was expected of Nurse this year, but he was unable to deliver. He possesses the size and pass rushing skills to be a specialist at the next level if he gets his game back on track."
Negatives: Not much of an arsenal... Takes the corner too upright... Lacks ideal bulk... Not very strong at the point of attack... Needs to improve technique... Doesn't use his hands well... Can be pushed upfield... Can be controlled by single blocker... Can be run at... Loses containment... Runs himself out of the play... Plays too high... Looks uncomfortable in space... Inconsistent... Doesn't appear to give his best effort at times... More of an athlete than football player... Raw, played only two years of high school football... Did not start until his senior season."
Strengths: Nurse is a very good athlete with the range to pursue to each sideline. He's got decent straight-line speed. Plays a smart game and is rarely out of position. Outstanding character person with good leadership skills and is active in the community.
Weaknesses: Nurse doesn't get going quickly and is very unproductive given his athleticism. No explosiveness and typically just takes up space on the d-line. Should be an edge rusher, but doesn't have any pass-rush repertoire and lacks the strength to get any push on the blocker.
Projection: Nurse certainly passes the eyeball test, but doesn't seem to do much else. Good kid who just isn't much of a football player. Unlikely to be drafted."
